The Italian advertising revolutionary is coming to Styria. And for two days you can watch him at work and learn from him. On 19 and 20 October Atelier Jungwirth is organizing a two-day Masterclass with the Milan-born photographer, which will convey fascinating insights into Toscani’s imagination not only for photographers but for creative individuals from all sectors. Not technology but the art of looking under the surface of things is paramount.
The workshop is entitled: “Is taking pictures enough to be a photographer?ˮ

To make it clear right away – taking beautiful pictures was always too little for Toscani. His photography is interested in real social issues. Against the background of war, anorexia and HIV imagery emerges that startles and gives even traditional companies significant impetus to finally open their eyes. Whether the photos are nevertheless “beautifulˮ has been debated fiercely for decades.

The Italian neither goes easy on himself nor on his customers. He looks under the sparkling surface and, in this way, creates new iconic pictures. Toscani has achieved so much in his career that only a small part can be re-told here. In addition to his work for Benetton he also created campaigns for Esprit, Chanel and Fiorucci. He worked for Elle, Vogue, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, Esquire, Stern and Liberation. He founded the magazine “Colorsˮ and was significantly involved in the establishment of Benetton’s creative workshop “Fabricaˮ. And he is considered to be a committed teacher who passes on his knowledge with passion.

Since 2007 he has been travelling around the world for his project RAZZA UMANA (www.razzaumana.it). The aim is to capture the diversity of humankind on photographs and videos. There will be an exhibition of Toscani’s works at Atelier Jungwirth in Graz as well as a talk, also in Graz, on 17 October.

Since 2012 the Atelier Jungwirth team has been organizing European workshops with Greg Gorman amidst scenic surroundings in cool locations.
In 2019 you will spend five days a Villa north of Milan. In a small group you can enter into an intense dialogue with Greg Gorman. He will assist you in indoor and outdoor shoots in this historic Villa. The honest criticism of the photos by the star photographer and the direct demonstration of his image optimization, which he gives daily based on the previous day’s work, are particularly instructive.

As regards content, in the workshops Greg Gorman deals with the areas which have made him famous – portrait photography and the nude. The participants learn the secrets of his lighting and can take photographs under his guidance. Selection of location, choice of model, analysis of model, treatment of light, natural or artificial light, colour, black and white, light and shade, perspectives, angles and positions, treatment of flawless bodies and also of normal, not quite so perfect bodies, picture analysis, optimization and image editing. Particularly exciting, above all, are the incidental conversations in which it is a matter of the many minor, unanswered questions – acquisition, marketing, customers, publishing houses, magazines, agencies, etc.

On 9th June Greg Gorman will give a lecture at Atelier Jungwirth about his photography featuring both technical and artistic aspects and about experiences with celebrity models. A live shooting session including a lighting demonstration and the opportunity to talk to the photographer personally will round off the evening.

A prize draw for a place at the exclusive 5-day workshop (Portrait & Nude) in the value of 3,960 euros including 20% VAT, will be held among everybody who has purchased a ticket for the evening.

The prize is transferable; the location of the workshop in June 2017 (Southern Styria, Italy or France) may be selected freely if still available. It is not necessary to attend the lecture in person to take part in the prize draw.

Greg Gorman, born in 1949 in Kansas City, is considered to be one of the greatest photographers of our time. Mr. Gorman became particularly well-known for his fine art figure studies and his striking photographs of film, music and sports personalities, all of which have been published in numerous books and exhibited globally. Gorman’s work has been published in numerous magazines worldwide and in hundreds of advertising campaigns. In 2012 a collection of his photographs were shown in Halle 8 in Graz. This represented the largest exhibition of his photographic work to date.

However, it is sometimes not easy for photographers who want to learn from Greg Gorman because the American’s workshops are rare and usually sell out very quickly. After the resounding success of the 2012 Austrian workshop, Atelier Jungwirth, Graz is once again bringing Mr. Gorman to Europe. Three specialized workshops with Mr. Gorman will take place in June 2015 in the unique locations of Provence, Tarragona (Catalonia) and Southern Styria around Ehrenhausen.
Within the workshops, Greg Gorman focuses on the areas which have made him famous throughout the world – portrait photography and figure studies. Der Workshop mit Greg Gorman hat meine Erwartungen in jeder Hinsicht übertroffen. Ich durfte so vieles, so intensiv und direkt von Greg lernen, dass mich diese Erfahrungen als Fotograf technisch und vor allem künstlerisch wirklich weitergebracht haben. Als kompletter Neuling im Bereich der Portrait- und Aktfotografie war ich sehr gespannt was mich bei dem Workshop erwarten würde –  und meine Erwartungen wurden absolut übertroffen! Man konnte nicht nur von Greg´s Einführungen in die Lichtsetzung und optimale Nutzung einer Location sehr viel lernen, sonden auch auch von seiner direkten Unterstützung beim Shooten konnte ich viel für mich mitnehmen. Die täglichen Morgenbesprechungen der Fotos vom Vortag fand ich super, da man so gleich ein Feedback hatte und Kritikpunkte beim nächsten Shooting gleich versuchen konnte umzusetzen. Toll fand ich auch das Teamwork mit den Kollegen und Christian´s Unterstützung!
On Top war die Unterkunft einfach wunderschön und auch die verschiedensten kulinarischen Locations am Abend waren ein zusätzliches Highlight.
Es waren sehr intensive, spannende aber auch sehr anstrengende Tage, aus denen ich aber sehr viel Energie und Ideen gewonne habe! Für mich war es eine absolut tolle Erfahrung mit Profis zu arbeiten – ich bin sehr froh dabei gewesen zu sein!!! 🙂

Es war eine einzigartige, inspirierende  und mit Sicherheit auch unvergessliche Erfahrung für mich. In diesen fünf Tagen konnte ich sehr viel mitnehmen und das erworbene Wissen auch sogleich in die Tat umsetzen. Es war auch eine Bereicherung sich einmal mit anderen Fotografen auszutauschen und in unterschiedlichen Teams zusammenzuarbeiten.  Aus den vielfältigen Bildern der Teilnehmenden, die alle ihren ganz eigenen Stil haben, sind meiner Meinung nach wirklich wunderbare Arbeiten in dieser Zeit entstanden. Darüber hinaus finde ich die Organisation des Atelier Jungwirths sehr beachtlich und kann den Workshop nur jedem weiterempfehlen!
